Classic Halloween Costume Images

Darren McCowan wrote:

In 1957, the release of the old Universal monster films to terrestrial television channels created a monster fad that never really subsided. This boom allowed some very popular movie monsters to become perennial Halloween screening favorites. Of course, this makes them perfect choices for Halloween masks….

Has there ever been a more popular character in film and literature than Dracula? From his debut in 1897 to the present day, Dracula remains a striking figure. This is why it is no surprise that Dracula masks and costumes are popular and among the top selling Halloween costumes for the past 50 years. Part of the reason for this is the sheer variety of Dracula style costumes. First, there is the classic Dracula image that we are most familiar from the old movies. This is obviously the most popular of the costumes, but there are many other spins on the classic Dracula costume out there as well. For example, did you know that there are historical Dracula costumes that are based on Vlad Tepes? Or, that there are “re-fashioned” costumes that bring Dracula apparel into the 21st century? Then, if you want to really scare people you might opt for a Nosferatu style feral Dracula. If you want people to laugh then you could stick with a costume based on The Count from Sesame Street! Yes, the options for Dracula costumes literally go on forever!

Then there is the Dracula costume’s close cousin. One of the most enduring of all the cinematic monsters is, of course, the Frankenstein Monster. Part of the reason for this is that the pathos of the creature makes him tragic and compelling. He is also one of the most recognisable monsters in history and that makes him perfect foil for Halloween masks. And, like Dracula, there are a multitude of Frankenstein costumes that range from the humorous to the downright scary. So, no matter what look you are going for there is a Frankenstein costume that will fit your needs.

The Wolfman remains one of the odder Halloween costumes. Even though the classic cinematic werewolf has his fans, Wolfman style Halloween masks have not always been supremely popular. One of the main reasons for this is the misconceptions people have about werewolf costumes. The two most common misconceptions about werewolf costumes are they are incredibly expensive and too hot to wear. In the past, it was true that werewolf costumes were incredibly expensive due to the painstaking skill required to weave all the hair into the fabric. However, thanks to the advent of modern technology the process for weaving the masks has made the prices come down. Plus, the costumes are designed for better ventilation and comfort so overheating really should not be a problem.

Of course, there are other classic monsters that can be tapped for Halloween masks such as The Mummy, The Phantom of the Opera, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and many others. What do they all have in common? They never really go out of style and they are all downright cool.

Why are Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolfman still such big stars?

The monsters of Universal horror films are all at least 50 years old, and many are much older. But even people who haven’t seen these movies still know Lugosi’s Dracula, Karloff’s Frankenstein, and Chaney’s Wolfman.

With all the amazing monsters in today’s movies, why are these oldies still so popular?

I have an exam tomorrow and I had to read the Dracula book for it, but I don’t manage so I just watched the film twice. I watched the film of Coppola. Has anybody watched the movie and read the book? Can I rely on the movie? Is it detailed?
Thank you very much for any help!

Monarch Models is the closest thing to AURORA Models that we’ll ever see. Their model kits match the old Aurora kits in size, the only real difference would be that the Monarch kits are sculpted better due to the talents of Jeff Yagher. The box art for Monarch Models closely resembles the James Bama art on the old Aurora boxes. Even the instruction sheets are alike. The first kit release from Monarch is NOSFERATU and the next kit that we’ll see from them will be the Ghost of Castel Mare’. If you’re a model builder and/or a fan of Aurora, you really need to check out Monarch Models.
